EPCOR is responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the electrical transmission and distribution system in Edmonton. To continue delivering safe and reliable power to our customers, we are completing upgrades to the Meadowlark Substation.

This substation is located at 15404 84 Ave NW.

Project details

Switchgear and reactor replacement
The Meadowlark Substation has been undergoing construction to both the interior and exterior of the building. This work has occurred in phases with the first phase completed in 2022. The second phase of work is ongoing and includes replacing the reactors and remaining switch gear located inside the substation building. Phase three work is ongoing and is expected to be complete by early 2025.

A switchgear is a part of the electrical system that serves to split electricity from a transformer to multiple distribution cables. This is similar to your house electrical panel in that it takes the incoming power and splits it amongst the many areas of your house. The switchgear performs the same function for a grouping of residential, industrial or commercial customers.

Switchgear and reactors work together to eliminate spikes in electricity voltage by slowing it down. By maintaining this equipment, EPCOR is working to continue providing safe and reliable power to the community.

Construction details

Construction noise

Residents will experience intermittent noise typical to construction as various equipment and trucks will be used for material delivery, concrete cutting, equipment installation and surface restoration. We will comply with the City of Edmonton’s Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control. If it is necessary to temporarily exceed acceptable noise levels, we will work with the City of Edmonton to obtain the necessary permits.

Hours of construction

We anticipate our hours of work for this project to be Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Road closures

The back alley east of the substation will be closed from spring until summer 2024. The area will be fenced off with traffic signs indicating no access or through traffic. Please see Construction Map for more information.

Power supply

No interruptions to power services are anticipated as a result of this project.

Work space

All work areas will be safe and secure. All construction activities will be in accordance with the City of Edmonton bylaws, Occupational Health and Safety requirements and our strict health, safety and environment program.

A lay down area to store equipment will be required and will be located in the back alley adjacent to the substation.

EPCOR and contractor vehicles on site, such as: a construction trailer, work trucks/vans, a welding truck, a forklift and other construction equipment. A generator may be required intermittently.

Affected landscaping and pavement within the work area will be restored to their original condition upon completion of the work when weather permits.
