What to do during power or water outages

Water and power outages can be planned or unexpected. You can take some simple precautions to keep you and your home safe during an outage.

Report a power or water outage

If you lose power or water, check if it is just your house or if your neighbourhood is affected. With power outages, it could simply be a tripped breaker.

Check EPCOR’s power outage map or water outage map. If you don’t see a problem in your area, report it by calling our 24/7 emergency line at 780-412-4500

on this page

Power outage tips: stay safe until electricity returns

  • Turn off heat-producing appliances and devices. Examples include home computers, phone chargers, toasters, stoves, and tools.

  • Unplug your electronics to protect your devices from potential power surges when the electricity turns on.

  • Preserve phone batteries. Use the power-saving mode on your mobile phone.

  • Don't open refrigerators or freezers. Only open the doors when necessary. If the doors stay shut, a full freezer will keep food frozen for 24 to 48 hours. A full fridge will stay cold for about 4 hours.

  • Turn on backup power for your sump pump. Learn more about sump pumps and other ways to protect your home from basement floods

  • Turn off all lights except one inside your home and one outside. Both lights will let you and our crews know when the power is back on.

  • Use flashlights for light. Candles can be a fire risk.

Water outage tips: stay safe until service is restored

  • Keep all water faucets turned off. Use water from your emergency supply if needed.

  • Don't use household appliances that need water (e.g., shower, bath, fridge ice-maker, dish washer, washing machine, etc.).

  • Turn off any appliances that were running when the water shut off.

  • Avoid activities that consume your drinking water supply, such as cooking or washing dishes.

  • Use hand sanitizer to wash your hands.

  • Flush the toilet by pouring a bucket of water directly into the bowl (not the tank).

  • If there is an outage, check the water outage map  to see if a water tank is available nearby. If a water tank is available, take clean jugs to fill up with potable water for drinking, cooking and toilet flushing.
