Causes of power and water outages

Water and power outages can happen unexpectedly, or they may be planned. Either way, our crews work quickly and safely to restore services to your area.

Common causes of power and water outages

  • Weather is the leading cause of outages. The freeze-thaw cycle can shift the earth and cause water mains to break. Severe weather, including freezing rain, high winds, lightning or extreme heat can cause power outages.

  • Equipment failure can cause a temporary outage while our crews make repairs.

  • Human error can cause an outage. This could be anything from a line or pipe damaged while digging to equipment hit in a traffic accident.

  • Scheduled maintenance, upgrades or equipment repairs can also result in a planned outage. We do this for the safety of our crews and the public. We keep these interruptions as short as possible and aim to schedule them during the least inconvenient times.

Report power or water outages

If you are experiencing an outage, check EPCOR’s power outage map or water outage map. If you don’t see your area on the map, report it by calling our 24/7 emergency line at 780-412-4500
