Information for professional arborists

If you are hired to trim a tree that is within 7 meters of power lines, you must contact SafetyCodes@epcor.com to comply with Occupational Health & Safety and Alberta Electrical and Utility Code (AEUC) rules - activities near overhead power lines.

If the Safety Codes calculation shows you are within minimum approach distance (MAD), contact VegetationManagement@epcor.com to clear vegetation up to a safe distance so your team can complete the work safely.

Removing a tree near power lines and need help? Here's what you need to know.

We require the following when you are removing a tree near power lines within the City of Edmonton:

Accurate address of the location, number of tree(s) to be removed, species of tree(s) to be removed.
The tree(s) to be pruned need to be identified with a blue ribbon/flagging with the tail of the ribbon facing the alley or road way so it is easily visible for us to locate.
The tree(s) to be removed will be identified with a blue spray painted capital E on the stem/bole of the tree facing the alley/roadway so it is easily visible for us to locate.

A tree has fallen on a powerline

Call 911 or our 24 hour power emergency line 780-412-4500 if the tree is:

Interfering with primary power lines
Causing power service issues
Causing severe stress on the service line

Utility locating is a free service

If you are using a stump grinder, remember to contact Utility Safety Partners at 1-800-242-3447 or utilitysafety.ca to find out where the utility lines are located on the property. The service will mark the location of power, water, drainage, natural gas, internet, and cable television lines with coloured paint and flags so you know where to avoid or use more caution. This service can take up to a week after you make the call.

Pruning a tree near power lines and need help? Here's what you need to know.

We require the following when you are pruning a tree within the City of Edmonton:

Accurate address of the location, number of tree(s) to be pruned, species of tree(s) to be pruned.
The tree(s) to be pruned need to be identified with a blue ribbon/flagging with the tail of the ribbon facing the alley or road way so it is easily visible for us to locate.

We will attempt to meet your request within 21 days (15 business days) of receiving your email. If the conditions above are not met when our contractor arrives on site it may take longer.

Bird nests and tree trimming

Spring means the arrival of many different species of migratory birds are finding new homes in the Edmonton area. EPCOR follows all Federal, Provincial acts, and City of Edmonton Bylaws regarding wildlife, migratory birds, and the city corporate tree policy and bylaws.

If a bird nest is found near or in the tree you are requesting EPCOR's assistance with, you will be notified and we will not work on this request until after the migratory bird season has passed and the fledglings (young birds) have left the nest.
