Lauderdale wastewater infrastructure repair

On this page

We're repairing wastewater infrastructure beneath 130 Avenue and 107 Street in the Lauderdale neighbourhood. This work is necessary to maintain reliable wastewater service for the community and support the safe reopening of the area.

We know this situation is disruptive for those in the area, and we appreciate your patience as crews work to safely complete repairs.

Repair status and plans

Crews have completed several important steps to prepare for repairs, including:

  • Installation of a temporary bypass system to safely move wastewater around the damaged pipe so service can continue while repairs are underway.
  • Installation of a deep access shaft to provide crews and equipment with safe access to the pipe.
  • Filling and stabilizing the subsidence that formed around the damaged infrastructure.

The careful completion of this work supports the safe and reliable operation of the bypass system as we proceed with repairs.

Next steps

With the bypass system in place and site preparation complete, crews will work to repair both the damaged wastewater pipe and the water main located above it.

Safety

The safety of our communities and crews is our top priority.

The affected area will remain closed and secured until it is safe to reopen. Please follow all posted signage, stay clear of construction equipment and bypass infrastructure, and keep a safe distance from fenced and barricaded areas.

What to expect

As repairs progress, those in the area can expect:

  • Temporary above-ground pipes, pumps, hoses and related equipment in the area. The bypass system will operate 24 hours a day and will be monitored continuously.
  • Construction crews and equipment throughout the corridor between 129 Avenue and 131A Avenue.
  • Signage, barricades and fencing in place to keep those in the area safely away from the worksite.
  • Occasional low water pressure. Your water remains clean and safe for drinking and everyday use. We will monitor the system closely to maintain typical pressure as much as possible.
  • Construction noise and possible odours associated with the bypass system. We will take steps to minimize impacts where possible and will comply with the City of Edmonton Noise Bylaw.

Upcoming wastewater rehabilitation work

Once these repairs are complete, additional wastewater infrastructure work will begin south of the current repair area, on 107 Street between 129 and 130 Avenue.

This section of pipe was already scheduled for relining later this year, but sewer separation work related to the Lauderdale flood mitigation project needed to advance first. However, excessive rainfall and resulting ground conditions further compromised the pipe’s condition, leading to the need for emergency repairs. Once these repairs are complete, the relining work will proceed to ensure reliability.

Schedule

  • Pipe repairs: Repairs to the wastewater pipe are now underway. Once the work is complete, repairs to the water main will begin. Together, both repairs are expected to take two and a half to three months to complete.
  • Rehabilitation: Relining on 107 Street between 129 and 130 Avenue will begin once wastewater and water repairs are complete. More details on this project will be provided closer to the start date.

Other work in the Lauderdale area

Residents and visitors may also notice other infrastructure projects underway in Lauderdale.

  • Lauderdale dry pond project: The wastewater pipe currently being repaired is separate from the dry pond project, which is designed to reduce flooding and improve drainage in the neighbourhood and surrounding areas. Construction on the dry pond project will continue in the coming months.
  • Pavement restoration work: Crews will also continue addressing pavement issues related to previous construction and restoration activities. Current work is taking place on 129 Avenue between 109 and 112 Street, and on 109 Street just south of 130 Avenue. Barricades, signage and detours will remain in place where required.

Traffic accommodations

As multiple infrastructure projects continue in the area, we recognize this work is disruptive for residents and those travelling through the area.

We are taking steps, wherever possible, to improve movement through the neighbourhood by updating traffic accommodations as work progresses. This includes reviewing opportunities to adjust detours, signage and traffic routing to minimize disruptions as much as possible.
