Lauderdale wastewater infrastructure repair

We're repairing wastewater infrastructure beneath 130 Avenue and 107 Street in the Lauderdale neighbourhood. Repair work is necessary to maintain reliable wastewater service for the community and support the safe reopening of the area.

We know this situation is disruptive for those in the area, and we appreciate your patience as crews work to safely complete repairs.

Crews are onsite advancing a repair strategy.

To complete repairs, a temporary bypass system is required. A bypass system is a temporary network of pipes and pumps that safely moves wastewater and stormwater around the damaged section of pipe. This allows wastewater service to continue uninterrupted while crews inspect, repair and replace the damaged infrastructure.

This work has involved drilling a 10-foot diameter deep shaft and preparing numerous temporary access points that allow crews to connect the bypasses to the wastewater collection system and safely direct flows around the damaged section of pipe. Given the size and depth of the infrastructure involved, and ongoing intense rain events, this work is being completed carefully to support the safe and reliable operation of the bypass system.

The bypass system will operate 24 hours a day and will be continuously monitored to ensure safe and reliable operation.

We will continue to provide updates as work progresses and more information becomes available about repair timelines.

To keep crews and the public safe, there will be traffic and access restrictions in the area. We will take steps to minimize impacts as much as possible.

Residents and those travelling through the area can expect:

• Continued road closures and traffic restrictions near 107 Street and 130 Avenue.
• Local access restrictions at some driveways, sidewalks and alley entrances where required for construction.
• Construction crews and equipment throughout the corridor between 129 Avenue and 131A Avenue.
• Temporary above-ground pipes, pumps, hoses and related equipment in the area.
• Signage, barricades and fencing around the worksite.

As part of our response, EPCOR has made temporary adjustments to the water system in the area. Some customers may occasionally experience lower-than-normal water pressure. This may be most noticeable in the early morning and evening hours when water use is typically highest. Your water remains clean and safe for drinking and everyday use.

We will continue monitoring the system closely to maintain typical pressure as much as possible. Small adjustments to water use, such as turning off taps when not in use, can help improve water pressure for everyone.

Residents near the work area may experience construction noise and occasional odours associated with the bypass system.

We will take steps to minimize impacts where possible and comply with the City of Edmonton Noise Bylaw.

You may also notice crews repairing pavement issues identified following recent rainfall.

This work is related to restoration completed last year as part of a separate project.

As part of this work, 129 Avenue is currently closed between 109 Street and 112 Street. Barricades, detours and traffic signage will be in place as needed.
