​EPCOR is responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the electrical transmission and distribution system in Edmonton. In order to continue delivering safe and reliable power to our customers, we are completing four maintenance projects within the Petrolia Substation.

​In May 2022 EPCOR began equipment replacement work in the Petrolia Substation, the work within the substation will be ongoing through 2023 and 2024.​​

Project overview

​EPCOR plans to complete six projects within the Petrolia Substation throughout 2023 and 2024: 

  • ​Disconnect Switch Replacement - completed

  • Transformer Replacement - completed

  • Current Transformer Replacement​ - completed

  • ​Privacy Fence Replacement - completed​

  • Grounding Upgrades - completed

  • Breaker Replacement

Circuit Breaker Replacement

EPCOR will be replacing six circuit breakers within the Petrolia substation as they have reached their end of life. A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. 

Work is expected to start in mid-April and will take approximately seven months to complete.​

Construction impacts

​Hours of work

The typical hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. These timelines are an estimate and may change based on weather and construction condition. 

Work space

All work areas will take place within the substation walls.

Noise

These projects may be noisy at times. We will comply with the City of Edmonton’s Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control. If it is necessary to temporarily exceed acceptable noise levels, we will work with the City of Edmonton to obtain the necessary permits.

Equipment and Vehicles On site

These projects will require a variety of vehicles and equipment within the Petrolia Substation, including cranes, hydrovac trucks, mini trenchers, delivery and hauling trucks and EPCOR vehicles.

Power Outages

Power outages are not required to complete these projects.

Safety

All work areas will be maintained in a safe and secure manner. All construction activities will be performed in accordance with the City of Edmonton’s bylaws, Occupational Health and Safety requirements and EPCOR’s strict health, safety and environmental procedures and guidelines.
