Our Drainage Neighbourhood Rehabilitation Program focuses on the renewal and replacement of public sanitary and storm sewers to reduce the possibility of sewer back-ups and minimize service disruptions.

We're improving drainage services in Edmonton neighborhoods

In combination with the City of Edmonton's Neighborhood Renewal Program (focused on the renewal and rebuilding of roads, sidewalks, and streetlights) and the Great Neighborhoods Capital Program (focused on improving the livability of Edmonton neighborhoods), our Drainage Neighborhood Rehabilitation program aims to renew physical infrastructure and help create vibrant, sustainable neighborhoods in Edmonton.

Public and private property

Only the public (EPCOR) portion of the drainage system is rehabilitated and renewed through this program. That generally includes services up to the property line.

Property owners are responsible for the maintenance of the sewer system on their property.

Our approach to rehabilitation

 Stage 1: Investigation and design

We clean both storm and sanitary lines by flushing pressured water through the pipes. Cameras are then placed into the pipes to inspect their condition age, material and history of sewer issues. Based on the findings from the inspection, we determine which lines in the neighborhood require replacement and rehabilitation and create a design plan to prioritize the work.

  Stage 2: Open-cut excavation

During this stage, we replace sewer lines in need of repair that aren't suitable for rehabilitation through relining. Roads, sidewalks and front lawns may need to be excavated to complete these repairs to the drainage system, which includes replacing/repairing manholes and catch basins. When rehabilitation is complete, all affected landscaping, pavement, sidewalks and alleyways will be restored to their original condition.

  Stage 3: Relining

Just prior to this step, we quickly clean the pipes one more time. Then, damaged pipes are rehabilitated using a trenchless relining method called Cured in Place Pipe, where a sleeve is inserted into broken pipes and then cured, restoring the structure of the existing pipes.

About 80% of rehabilitation work is completed through relining to minimize disruption to pavement and landscaping.

Impacted neighborhoods

Here is a list of Edmonton neighborhoods included in our Drainage Neighborhood Rehabilitation program along with the expected timeline for each stage of work.

Where possible, we coordinated our rehabilitation schedule with the City of Edmonton's Neighborhood Renewal Program, which will take place after the drainage rehabilitation program is complete. Coordination with the City's renewal program was not possible in neighborhoods with no City Renewal date indicated.
