Every time you flush, rinse or pull the plug, the wastewater you send down the drain enters a subterranean maze of pipes that carries the liquid, by gravity flow and 69 pumping stations, to a special plant for treatment.

The vast majority of Edmonton's wastewater goes to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. Some of the wastewater collected in the northeast section of the City is sent to the Capital Region Sewage Treatment Plant. In exchange, the Gold Bar plant accepts some wastewater generated by communities located south of the City. The Capital Region plant is located in Strathcona County and operated by a consortium of nearby counties, municipal districts, towns and cities.
