Causes of sewer odour in your neighbourhood
Sewer odours outside are typically caused by a build up of sewer gas which has escaped from the sewer system in your neighbourhood. Some areas of Edmonton are more prone to issues with odours depending on the type of sewer system. Build-up of sewer gas in the drainage system has two main downfalls, corrosion of existing infrastructure and the release of sewer gas to the neighbourhood.
EPCOR is working to reduce sewer odours in Edmonton neighbourhoods with our
Corrosion and Odour Reduction Strategy. This action plan is designed to reduce the impacts of sewer corrosion and odours and improve the quality of life for Edmontonians.

Causes of sewer odour in your home
A sewer smell in your home is most likely caused by a buildup of sewer gas in either the plumbing or venting system in your home. A dried out p-trap is a common reason for sewer odours. P-traps that are dried out no longer prevent sewer gas from escaping your pipes. A possible fix is to pour water down your drains.
If the sewer odour in your home is caused by a sewer line backup, call our 24/7 emergency line at
