Managing sewer smell inside or outside your home

Nobody likes sewer odours; they are unpleasant. Sewer odour can be a result of an issue within your private plumbing or the EPCOR drainage system. Sewer odours are caused by hydrogen sulfide gas produced during the breakdown of organic matter. Hydrogen sulfide gas can be smelled at very low levels and has a characteristic odour of rotten eggs.

Causes of sewer odour in your neighborhood

Sewer odours outside are typically caused by a build up of sewer gas which has escaped from the sewer system in your neighborhood. Some areas of Edmonton are more prone to issues with odours depending on the type of sewer system. Build-up of sewer gas in the drainage system has two main downfalls, corrosion of existing infrastructure and the release of sewer gas to the neighborhood.

EPCOR is working to reduce sewer odours in Edmonton neighborhoods with our Corrosion and Odour Reduction Strategy. This action plan is designed to reduce the impacts of sewer corrosion and odours and improve the quality of life for Edmontonians.

If you have concerns about a sewage smell in your neighborhood, or you want to report a drainage issue or emergency you can contact our 24/7 emergency line at (780) 412-4500.

Causes of sewer odour in your home

A sewer smell in your home is most likely caused by a buildup of sewer gas in either the plumbing or venting system in your home. A dried out p-trap is a common reason for sewer odours. P-traps that are dried out no longer prevent sewer gas from escaping your pipes. A possible fix is to pour water down your drains.

If the sewer odour in your home is caused by a sewer line backup, call our 24/7 emergency line at (780) 412-4500.
