Fixed and floating rates explained

Fixed rates

A fixed rate is a stable rate option that provides predictability throughout the term of your plan. While the market fluctuates, your price remains constant. Because your consumption varies from month to month, your energy charge will too. However, your unit price won't.

Is fixed right for me?

Fixed rates are ideal if you want to minimize changes/fluctuations in your energy charges from month to month. But because future prices and consumption are unknown, extra risk margin is built into fixed rates to cover retailer costs.

Floating rates

A floating rate is based on market prices, so the rate for a month is determined after the month has passed. So while the billing will come in a bit later, all the same benefits of Encor apply. With our floating plans, you always pay the market rate.

Is floating right for me?

Since you're following the rise and fall of the market, your bill will change month to month. But we offer price cap protection on floating power plans so you'll never pay more than 9.99¢ per kWh, even if the market rises above.

The value of floating plans

With Alberta's energy prices at the lowest they've been in years, yours can be too.

Floating power rates are typically lower than the fixed rate and Regulated Rate Option (RRO) because there aren't any risk margins built into its prices. Plus, you're protected from extremely high price spikes with the power plan protection cap of 9.99¢/kWh.

Floating natural gas rates are also lower than the fixed rate, and for the past year and a half have tracked very closely with the default rates; in the past, it's been slightly above, and slightly below, the default price depending on the month.

9.99¢/kWh power price protection

Several factors can influence market prices. And while these can't be predicted, we guard you from these occasional power price spikes. Looking at historical rates, you'll see that 9.99¢/kWh is much higher than typical floating rates, but it gives you protection from price uncertainty if the market price happens to rise above it.

Floating rates are historically lower

Since the summer of 2015, our floating electricity rates have almost always been lower than the RRO. Since there's no guarantee that these rates will consistently remain below the RRO rate, you can always switch your floating plan to the RRO or a fixed rate plan if prices rise.
