Removing a water meter

When you need to have a water meter removed, EPCOR recommends removing your water meter first before removing gas and power meters.

EPCOR recommends removing utility meters in the following order: water, natural gas and power. This helps prevent the water meter and private water pipes from freezing and potentially bursting during the winter months if the space is unheated.

When you may need to remove a water meter

You may need to remove a water meter if:

  • you are demolishing a property;
  • you are relocating the meter due to major renovations; or
  • your property has experienced a significant event, such as a fire.

Steps to remove a water meter

Step 1: Book an appointment with EPCOR

Removing a water meter requires an appointment with EPCOR. The EPCOR account holder - the person responsible for the account and paying the bill - for the address where the removal is being requested must phone to make the appointment. Call our Customer Care Team and we’ll set up an appointment for you:

Step 2: Water shut-off

During your appointment, EPCOR will attempt to shut off your water service at the curb through the CC (curbstop) valve. In some cases, we may not be able to shut off water at the curb right away, which could delay disconnection. Please keep this in mind when scheduling other utility removals or applying for demolition permits.
