EPCOR is responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the electrical transmission and distribution system in Edmonton. In order to continue delivering safe and reliable power to our customers, we are completing two projects within the Petrolia Substation.
EPCOR plans to complete two projects within the Petrolia Substation:
Circuit Breaker Replacement Project – December 2024
Circuit Breaker Addition Project – September 2024
EPCOR will be replacing six circuit breakers within the Petrolia substation as they have reached their end of life. A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit.
Work is expected to be completed by December 2024.
In order to connect a new distribution power cable to the Petrolia Substation, we need to install a new circuit breaker. This work is to improve reliability in southwest Edmonton. The circuit breaker will be installed within the substation building and is planned for the end of September.
Please provide any feedback on this project by August 30, 2024.

The typical hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. These timelines are an estimate and may change based on weather and construction condition.
All work areas will take place within the substation walls.
These projects may be noisy at times. We will comply with the City of Edmonton’s Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control. If it is necessary to temporarily exceed acceptable noise levels, we will work with the City of Edmonton to obtain the necessary permits.
These projects will require a variety of vehicles and equipment within the Petrolia Substation, including cranes, hydrovac trucks, mini trenchers, delivery and hauling trucks and EPCOR vehicles.
Power outages are not required to complete these projects.
All work areas will be maintained in a safe and secure manner. All construction activities will be performed in accordance with the City of Edmonton’s bylaws, Occupational Health and Safety requirements and EPCOR’s strict health, safety and environmental procedures and guidelines.
Alberta’s electrical system is regulated by the AUC. The AUC is an independent, quasi-judicial agency that ensures the delivery of Alberta’s utility services takes place in a manner that is fair, responsible and in the public interest.
