Summer's here! In Alberta, our summers tend to be a bit shorter, so we have to make the best of them. This is when we tend to spend a lot of our free time, spending time in the great outdoors. Check out a few of our outdoor summer tips below. 

The most important tip: if there's an emergency, call 911. 

BBQs and fir​e pits

• Keep grills and fire pits at least 3 feet from siding, deck rails and fencing.

• Keep an extinguisher nearby.

• Remember to follow local guidelines when it comes to BBQ and fire pits.
  

Stay h​​ydrated

• Drink lots of water.

• Limit caffeine as it can cause dehydration.

• Drink responsibly when consuming alcohol beverages.
  

Have a first​​ aid kit

• Make sure your first-aid kit is up-to-date and fully stocked.

• Add insect repellent to your kit to keep the little bugs away.

• Add sunburn relief over-the-counter medication to cool skin irritation.
  

Be cautiou​​s around bodies of water

• Supervise all swimmers to make sure everyone is safe.

• Follow local guidelines when it comes to pool and water safety.​
  

General outd​oor safety

• We'll say it again: call 911 in the case of an emergency.

• Wear sunscreen to prevent sunburn.
  

• Avoid storing flammable liquids near a grill, heat source or in the sunlight.

• Limit doing yard work that requires a gas or electric motor during peak sun hours.
