The cooler season has arrived. Home maintenance is a year-round endeavour no matter if you live in a house, condo, or acreage. Here’s a breakdown of how you can get your home, closet, vehicle, and even treats ready for icy temperatures!  ​​

Getting your home ready for w​inter

• ​Check your furnace filters if you haven’t yet.
• Switch your central humidifier to “Winter” and change the filter.
• Check your windows and doors for condensation – replace caulking. 
• Have your chimney inspected for damage and repairs – this includes for both wood and gas fireplaces.
• If you haven’t changed the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide monitors, please change it.
• Avoid overloading your circuits especially for your holiday lights. 
• Double-check your power cords and extensions, and replace damaged ones. 
• Safely break icicles to prevent home damage in your attic or exterior walls. 
• If you have an ice dam, reach out to a professional to inspect your eavestroughs.

​​Getting your closet ready for winter

• Move summer items to the sides or back of your closet, or store them elsewhere.
• Bring out your thicker knits and fabrics for easier access.
• ​Wools and wool-blends are a great way to keep you warm!
• ​Open-toe footwear is not recommended for Alberta winters! Swap out for closed-toe, well-insulated and treaded footwear.​
  

Getting your vehicle ready for winter

• ​​Make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition.
  
• Top your washer fluid with suitable fluid that can handle freezing temperatures.
• Have an extra bottle in your vehicle – just in case!
• Winter tires are recommended for snowy roads.
• Make sure your emergency car kit is fully stocked including a throw!
• Visit an auto shop to ensure your vehicle is ready!
