Rate of Last Resort (RoLR) for your small business

In Alberta, you have choice. You can pay the current default rate for electricity or a competitive rate with a retailer.

If you have not signed a contract with a retailer, you are on the Rate of Last Return (RoLR) for electricity. This means you are on a stable rate that does not fluctuate on a monthly basis.

The Rate of Last Resort electricity rate is reviewed and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission

  • The current rate period is January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2026.

About default supply

• No contract required
• Market pricing
• Locally operated
• Dedicated support

What's default supply?

Default supply service is designed to meet the needs of industrial and commercial customers. You'll be enrolled for default supply if you use more than 250 MWh of electricity per year

Rather than being billed on the Rate of Last Resort for electricity, your energy charge will flow through the actual wholesale cost of electricity with an administration fee. Customers with Time-of-Use metering will have energy charges based on individual usage, otherwise the energy charges will be an average of all customers on a Flow-Through product. We understand that it can be difficult to budget when the price of power can fluctuate significantly. That's why we also offer a Default Supply Hedged product that fixes a portion of your electricity cost in advance of the month. The remaining portion of your bill will reflect the hourly market price for electricity based on your usage. This combination of fixed and variable rates will protect your budget from price fluctuations that can result in Alberta's electricity market.

The choice is yours and there is no contract required. See the tables below for the currently forecasted supply prices for the Flow-Through, Time-of-Use, and Hedged products.

This table illustrates estimated default supply rates only (¢/kWh). You will be billed based on the actual pool price, as well as tariff charges.
