MicroFIT contract transfer

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) operated the MicroFIT Program in Ontario from 2009 to 2017, allowing homeowners and other eligible participants to generate renewable electricity and contribute to Ontario’s grid. While the program is closed to new applications, existing MicroFIT contracts can still be transferred to new owners.

A MicroFIT account is linked to a small renewable energy generation system such as solar panels that sells electricity back to the grid under a contract with the IESO. If you are buying or selling a property with a MicroFIT system, the contract transfer must be completed through the IESO and EPCOR. The property sale and the MicroFIT contract transfer are separate processes.

Follow these steps to ensure a smooth transfer:

Step 1: Initiate transfer with IESO

The Assignor (current contract holder) and Assignee (new owner) must start the transfer through the IESO Beacon Portal.

You will need the property address and, for purchasers, the MicroFIT account number (available from EPCOR). The IESO will guide you through the remaining steps online. For technical or application assistance, contact the IESO.

Important: All MicroFIT ownership transfers must be initiated through the IESO. EPCOR can only assist once the IESO confirms the completed transfer.

Step 2: Request a generation account number from EPCOR

While completing the IESO transfer, the Assignee must request a generation account number from EPCOR.

Email: moves.ontario@epcor.com
Subject line: MicroFIT Contract Transfer – [Address of MicroFIT System]

Step 3: Submit pre-Authorized payment (PAP) form

Download and complete the MicroFIT bank form to enable credit payments to your bank account. Email the completed form to: customercare.ontario@epcor.com

If you are HST registered, include your HST status and registration number when submitting the form.

Step 4: Account activation by EPCOR

Once the IESO confirms the contract transfer, EPCOR will activate your generation account based on the effective date provided by the IESO. The effective date is the date the IESO consents to the transfer; backdating to match the property sale date is not permitted.

Important details about MicroFIT transfers

  • The sale of the property and solar equipment does not automatically transfer the MicroFIT contract. Only the current contract holder (Assignor) can initiate the transfer through the IESO.
  • Any financial agreements or disputes between the Assignor and Assignee such as unpaid generation revenue or equipment costs must be resolved privately. EPCOR does not mediate or enforce terms of the property sale.
  • If the property has both a regular utility account and a MicroFIT account, you will receive separate bills for each.
  • No changes are required to your MicroFIT equipment (solar panels, meter, etc.) during the transfer. The only change is the ownership of the MicroFIT contract.
  • Timelines for the transfer vary depending on how quickly both parties submit their applications and how soon the IESO reviews and approves them. It typically takes a few weeks to several months.
