If you hit an underground power line

If you hit a utility line (or think you did):

  • Stop digging immediately. Move at least 10 metres away from the area.
  • If someone is hurt, ask them to move from the area and immediately call 911. If the person cannot move by themself, do not try to move them.
  • Report any damage to EPCOR. We will determine if repairs are needed.

If a vehicle hits a power line

If you can't safely remove your vehicle from the scene:

  • Stay inside your vehicle. This protects you from a risk of electrical shock.
  • Call 911. They secure the area until an EPCOR crew can turn off the power.
  • Wait inside your vehicle until an EPCOR employee can open the door for you. They will give you instructions on how to exit your vehicle safely.

Keep others away from the vehicle

Tell others to stay at least 10 metres away from your vehicle and the damaged power equipment.

If there is a fire at the scene

Only attempt the following steps if it is no longer safe to remain in your vehicle or equipment.

If there is a fire and you need to exit your vehicle, stay calm. For your safety, you'll need to move away in a controlled manner.

  • Exit by jumping clear of the vehicle. Keep your feet close together and try to land on the ground with both feet at the same time.
  • Never touch your vehicle and the ground at the same time.
  • Don't reach back into the vehicle.
  • Move away from the vehicle by shuffling your feet, always keep both feet together and on the ground. Shuffle at least 10 metres away.
  • Do not return to your vehicle.

If you witness an electrical injury

When providing first aid for electrical injuries, ensure your own safety first.

Do not touch or help a person who has been electrically shocked or burned until the source of electricity has been removed.

If it is safe to do so, provide first aid by assessing consciousness, checking for a pulse and circulation, and treating burns (if possible). Focus on life-saving measures as instructed in first aid. These types of injuries are usually far beyond first aid measures and require a timely and professional medical response.
