Responding to record-breaking weather events

Updates and information to help keep you and your property safe as Edmonton continues to experience significant rainfall and severe weather this summer.

EPCOR crews continue to monitor conditions and respond to recent rain and storm impacts across Edmonton

While the recent break in the weather has helped conditions improve, our teams continue to monitor system performance and forecasts closely.

Plans remain in place to respond 24/7 to changing conditions. Crews, support staff and equipment are ready to address any ongoing or emerging impacts, including pooling water, localized flooding, downed power lines and power outages, and to respond to customer inquiries.

Stay safe during heavy rain and storms

Heavy rain and severe storms can create safety risks at home, on the road and around community infrastructure. Use these tips and resources to help protect yourself, your property and your neighbourhood.

Flood prevention at home

There are steps you can take year-round to help reduce the risk of flooding and sewer backups on your property.

We also offer programs and resources to help you strengthen your flood resilience.

Catch basins

During heavy rainfall, increased runoff can carry vegetation and debris into catch basins and sometimes restrict water from draining.

If you see a blocked catch basin, and it is safe to do so, you can help by clearing debris.

If conditions are not safe, please report it by calling 780-412-4500.

Stormwater pond safety

Stormwater pond levels can change quickly during heavy rain events and conditions such as unstable shorelines make them unsafe for recreation.

Please stay back as these ponds do their most important work.

Road and underpass safety

When heavy rain hits, avoid flooded roadways and stay clear of underpasses.

Map out alternate routes ahead of time or delay getting on the roads when severe weather alerts are issued.

Maintenance hole covers

During major rain events when flows are exceptionally high, it's possible for a maintenance hole cover to dislodge.

If you notice a displaced cover, keep a safe distance and report it immediately by calling 780-412-4500.

Power outages

The latest information on power outages can be found on our power outage map.

Learn how to prepare for an unexpected power outage and stay safe until power is restored.

Downed power lines

Storms and strong winds are a common cause of downed lines. If you see a downed power line, stay 10 metres back (about the length of a school bus) and warn anyone nearby.

Even if the line isn't sparking, it can still be energized and dangerous.

Immediately report a downed line by calling 911 or 780-412-4500.

Horseshoe Creek

Heavy rainfall in June caused significant erosion in Horseshoe Creek, damaging both 137 Avenue and the nearby pedestrian bridge at the creek crossing.

Investing in Edmonton's future

Over the past five years, EPCOR has invested approximately $350 million in flood mitigation projects, including dry ponds, green infrastructure and sewer upgrades. These investments are part of a 20-year, $1.6 billion program designed to help reduce flood risk across Edmonton.

We've also added power capacity in five critical neighbourhoods to strengthen the power system and improve reliability.
