We are hiring an Associate Director, Health & Safety – Commercial & Shared Services for a full‑time, permanent position based in Edmonton, AB. This opportunity is open to both internal and external candidates and may be eligible for EPCOR’s Where We Work hybrid program, based on business needs.

This is a strategic leadership role with enterprise visibility and influence. You will lead a high‑performing team that partners with business leaders and employees to manage operational risk, strengthen safety culture, and advance EPCOR’s health and safety strategy across Commercial Services and Canadian operations.

In this role, you will have functional accountability for key H&S portfolios, including Contractor Safety Management, Incident and Injury Management, and Occupational Hygiene. Your leadership will help shape best‑practice programs and systems that enable the business to proactively manage hazards, respond effectively to incidents, and continuously improve safety performance.

You will work closely with senior leaders, Business Unit HSE teams, Corporate HSE, and external stakeholders, providing trusted guidance on risk, strategy, and operational priorities. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful, organization‑wide impact while helping EPCOR deliver on its commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.

What you’d be responsible for

Reporting to the Senior Director, Health Safety Security & Environment (HSE), you will provide functional leadership and governance for Health & Safety across Commercial Services and Canadian operations.

Leadership & Governance

• Providing functional accountability for H&S performance across Canada and relevant lines of business, including Contractor Safety Management, Incident Management, Injury Management, Occupational Hygiene and Driver and Vehicle Safety.
• Ensuring a consistent H&S Management System is implemented and sustained across business units and operating areas.
• Providing guidance and governance support to U.S. Operations.

Strategy, Risk & Continuous Improvement

• Assessing operational and organizational risk to inform best‑practice H&S programs and strategies.
• Developing and implementing plans to improve operational effectiveness and risk control.
• Measuring, analyzing, and reporting on H&S performance metrics.
• Championing continuous improvement to enhance H&S processes and programs.

Compliance, Audits & Regulatory Engagement

• Ensuring compliance with HSE policy, standards, procedures, and legislation through audits, site observations, training and communication.
• Reviewing and supporting management responses to internal and external H&S audits.
• Communicating with and influencing regulatory agencies and industry groups.

Partnership & Incident Leadership

• Partnering with Business Unit leadership through coaching and advisory support to strengthen HSE ownership, performance, and compliance across operations.
• Building and maintaining strong, effective relationships with internal and external customers, vendors, and key stakeholders; liaise with subject matter experts; and actively participate in cross‑functional working groups.
• Collaborating closely with the broader HSE team to implement and sustain enterprise standards, strategies, and initiatives.
• Acting as the Safety Officer within the Incident Command Team when required, providing leadership and technical guidance during incident response.

Driver & Vehicle Safety

• Leading the development and implementation of driver and vehicle safety programs to ensure vehicles and equipment are operated safely and competently.
• Accountable for the design and oversight of an enterprise‑wide driver safety program, including training curricula for drivers and equipment operators with strong practical and applied components.
• Establishing and maintaining policies, standards, procedures, and practices related to vehicle and equipment operation, ensuring consistency and alignment across EPCOR.

What’s required to be successful

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications, experience and behaviours:

Qualifications & Certifications:

• Post-Secondary (Diploma or Degree) Education in Health, Safety & Environment or related discipline is required.
• Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is required.
• Additional certifications include.
  • Continuous Improvement certification (Shingo Discover, Lean or Six Sigma)
  • ISO45001 Internal Auditor certification.
  • Incident Command System 200 certification.

Candidates who do not currently hold these designations/certifications but aspire to attain them may be considered at a development level and will be expected to obtain them within 24 months of hire.

Experience:

• 10+ years of progressive HSE experience including:
  • 7+ years within a complex, mid-sized or larger organization.
  • 5years in a leadership role with accountability for managing managers and their direct reports.
• Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and sustaining HSE programs, projects, or initiatives aligned to a clear strategic direction.
• Strong understanding of HSE management systems, regulatory requirements, and operational risk management across diverse business operations.
• Excellent communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills, with the ability to express technical information to diverse audiences across multiple business units.
• Proven ability to build, lead, and develop high‑performing teams in a unionized environment, fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging workplace.
• Experience partnering with senior leaders to influence decision‑making, manage operational risk, and embed a culture of safety accountability.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate across and within multi-functional teams and building strong internal partnerships with unions, Human Resources, business units, etc.
• High level of confidence, professionalism, and initiative, especially when advising senior leaders or navigating sensitive health and safety matters.

Hybrid Work & Travel: This role supports EPCOR’s hybrid work model while prioritizing on-site presence and engagement, reflecting the hands‑on nature of health and safety leadership. Approximately 15% local and regional travel is expected.
