Natural gas connection process for your home

Understand what’s involved in connecting a home to natural gas, from availability review to service activation.
On this page

Connecting your home to natural gas includes a few simple steps to make sure everything is safe, accurate, and ready. We'll guide you through each stage and let you know when action is needed from you.

Getting started

Check natural gas availability

The process begins with the natural gas availability form.

After you submit the form, EPCOR reviews your location to confirm whether natural gas can be brought to your property. Once the review is complete, you’ll receive an email with the next steps.

Planning and preparation

Request your gas meter

If your location is eligible, you’ll be asked to complete a Meter Size and Location Request form.

This form helps plan where your gas meter will be installed and how the gas line will connect to your home. Information requested may include:

  • Contact and property details
  • Preferred meter location
  • Gas appliances you plan to use
  • Property features that could affect installation (septic, irrigation, water lines)

Once the form is submitted, we'll prepare for an initial site visit.

Important: Do not disconnect your current fuel source or remove any equipment until natural gas service is installed and your meter activation appointment is booked.

Initial site visit

During the initial site visit, an EPCOR technician visits your property to confirm details needed for installation.

This visit may include:

  • Confirming the path and size of the gas line
  • Confirming the meter location
  • Measuring distances and noting site conditions

All work happens outside your home. You do not need to be present.

Set up preauthorized payments

Before service can start, you’ll need to complete a preauthorized payment form. This allows automatic bill payments once your natural gas service begins.

If required, we may also accept:

  • A reference letter from another natural gas or electricity provider, or
  • A $300 refundable security deposit included on your first bill once service begins (refunded after 12 months of established payment history)

Work with an HVAC contractor

You’ll need to work with a licensed HVAC contractor to prepare your home and appliances for natural gas.

Your contractor can help:

  • Confirm connection requirements
  • Inspect appliances and equipment
  • Identify updates you may need
  • Discuss future appliance options

Review your contract with your existing heating provider to confirm any notice requirements.

Installation and activation

Installation and final site visit

Once installation is complete and your HVAC contractor confirms everything is ready, you or your HVAC contractor must contact us to arrange the final site visit.

During this visit, we'll work with your HVAC contractor to:

  • Turn on the gas meter
  • Inspect and light your natural gas equipment and/or appliances

You’ll need to be home for this visit.

If some appliances aren’t ready yet, your contractor can return later to complete the work.

Welcome package

Once your natural gas service is connected, you’ll receive a welcome package with important information about your service. It covers account details, safety guidance, and energy efficiency tips to help you get started.
