Natural gas site visit and installation

Know what to expect when EPCOR installs service lines, meters, and activates natural gas at your property.

1. Initial site visit

The first visit helps us prepare for safe and accurate installation.

During this visit, we will:

  • Confirm the pathway and size of the gas line from the street to your property
  • Confirm the meter location based on your meter request form
  • Measure the distance from the property line to the meter location*
  • Take photos for construction and installation records
  • Place a mark or sticker showing where the meter will be installed (Please do not move or remove this mark)

All work during this visit happens outside the building. You do not need to be present.

* Installation from the gas main to the meter is included for up to 30 metres from your property line. Most properties can be connected within this distance. If more piping is needed, we’ll provide a cost estimate. Any approved extra costs will appear on your first bill.

2. Gas line and meter installation

Once planning is complete, crews will install the gas line from the street to your property and install your gas meter.

You’ll receive notice before work begins on your property.

Prepare the area for construction

To help avoid delays:

  • Don't plant gardens or add landscaping near the marked meter location
  • Remove existing plants, shrubs, or trees along the marked path to the meter
  • Keep the area clear so crews can access the work zone

If ground surfaces such as lawns are disturbed, they will be restored with grass seed or sod.

Utility markings and installation timing

About 1 to 3 weeks before installation, utility companies will mark underground services on your property.

Please:

  • Do not move or remove flags, paint, or stakes
  • Keep marks in place until installation is complete

Once the gas line is installed, your meter is typically installed within a few days.

3. Final visit to start your service

After installation is complete and your HVAC contractor has confirmed requirements are met, you or your HVAC contractor must contact EPCOR to arrange the final site visit.

During this visit, we'll work with your HVAC contractor to:

  • Turn on the meter
  • Inspect and light your natural gas equipment and/or appliances

You’ll need to be present for this visit.

If some equipment and/or appliances are not ready, your HVAC contractor can return later to complete the work.
