Deposits

Understand when a refundable security deposit may apply and how it can be reduced or returned.

A security deposit is sometimes required when starting natural gas service. Deposits help ensure accounts are set up responsibly and are fully refundable once a payment history is established.

Many customers do not need to pay a deposit. We will let you know if a deposit applies to your account.

How deposit amounts are determined

The deposit amount depends on factors such as:

  • The type of service (for example, residential or commercial)
  • Expected usage at the service location
  • Account and payment history, if available

In Southern Bruce communities, a typical residential security deposit is $300. Deposit amounts for businesses may vary depending on service type and usage.

Getting your deposit back

Security deposits are held for a minimum of 12 months.

To receive a deposit refund, you must:

  • Pay your bills in full and on time
  • Do so for 12 consecutive months

The 12‑month period begins on the deposit due date, not the service start date.
If a bill or the deposit itself is paid late, the refund date may be delayed.

Once the required payment history is established, the deposit is refunded automatically.

Ways a deposit may be reduced or waived

In some cases, a security deposit may be reduced or waived if you:

  • Have a satisfactory credit review (completed by an external credit agency), or
  • Provide a reference letter from another natural gas or electricity provider, or
  • Have an established positive payment history with us, or
  • Choose to enroll in preauthorized payments (automatic withdrawal)

We will review available options and let you know what applies to your account.
