Our natural gas experience

Natural gas distribution and expansion

EPCOR provides safe and reliable natural gas to thousands of customers in more than 30 communities in Canada and the United States. Our natural gas distribution includes over 8,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Southwestern Ontario. In Texas, we provide natural gas services to approximately 4,500 service connections in the Houston area.

Utility management and billing

In addition to distribution, we oversee the operations and billing for the natural gas service that we provide. Discover how EPCOR can help your company or municipality with natural gas distribution and management.

Greenfield natural gas infrastructure

In addition to our experience providing natural gas distribution services, we have also undertaken the construction of a greenfield natural gas pipeline and distribution system. Our new distribution system provides natural gas services in the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie, Municipality of Kincardine and the Township of Huron-Kinloss in Ontario, Canada. At full buildout, this natural gas distribution system will provide natural gas to over 5,000 residential, commercial and industrial clients. The system includes:

  • A high-pressure line to transport gas into the community and;
  • Distribution piping to service homes and businesses

Greenfield vs brownfield approach to natural gas infrastructure

A greenfield approach to project delivery is best suited to situations where pre-existing natural gas distribution systems don't already exist.

EPCOR can also provide service for brownfield projects - where there is a need to upgrade, modify or redevelop an existing system. In some cases that may mean a complete tear-down and redevelopment of the natural gas distribution system.

If you are looking to develop new infrastructure, or looking to upgrade existing systems, we can support you with our natural gas related project services. Contact us to discuss the many ways we can support you through your project lifecycle.

Natural gas infrastructure acquisition

Another approach to manage your existing natural gas distribution system is through the divestiture of natural gas infrastructure systems. Distribution systems can be costly to maintain and properly upgrade to keep up with capacity and operational requirements. EPCOR helps clients by acquiring their existing natural gas infrastructure systems and continuing to provide safe and reliable energy to customers.

If you are a utility provider or owner of an existing natural gas pipeline or distribution infrastructure connect with EPCOR to discuss what options are available.

Renewable natural gas and green energy solutions

We are investing in green energy, including renewable natural gas production and solar energy. We use clean energy services to help power our operations, reduce our environmental footprint and operate in an environmentally sustainable manner.

We can help you with understanding your options when it comes to renewable natural gas services and whether it would be a fit for your project.

Biogas and sustainable energy sources

Biogas, a by-product of wastewater treatment and other anaerobic digestion processes, is currently used for heating and other purposes by EPCOR in our facilities. Biogas is classified as a renewable resource because its production-and-use cycle repeats continuously, and it generates no net carbon dioxide.

Technology exists to capture biogas, clean it and deliver it into natural gas distribution systems as a source of renewable natural gas. Upgrading biogas to renewable natural gas requires adding biogas cleaning and injection equipment.

EPCOR works with municipalities to upgrade existing wastewater treatment plants to maximize the value of the biogas produced. We are also developing new greenfield organic waste-to-energy solutions to help municipalities with manage their source-separated organics and their organics from green bin initiatives.
