Natural Gas Barbecue Safety Tips

​​One way to keep your house cool on a warm summer day is to use the BBQ instead of your oven, which creates more heat inside your house.   It's also the season to grill your favorite foods and share beautiful moments with friends and family.  Nothing says summer fun like barbecuing and enjoying a good laugh with the ones you love, but just remember to be safe when using your natural gas barbecue.

Before you barbecue

1. Clean your barbecue and inspect each burner for blockages and debris.  
2. Make sure your quick disconnect valve is securely connected.
3. Inspect all your lines and connections, and replace broken, cracked or damaged ones.
4. Review the manufacturer's instructions for proper use and maintenance of your barbecue.

Using your barbecue

1. Place your barbecue in a well ventilated area.
2. Keep the barbecue lid open until it is lit.
3. If the barbecue doesn't light, turn off your natural gas or propane. Wait 5 to 10 minutes and try again.
4. Never leave your lit grill unattended.
5. Keep your barbecue away from combustible materials and other sources of extreme heat.

After you barbecue

1. Turn off all barbecue burner controls.
2. Shut off the gas valve and ensure it is shut off all the way.
3. Let the remaining gas in the hoses burn off before storing your barbecue.
4. Once the barbecue has cooled down, cover it up to protect it from rain and debris.

Cleaning hack

Wipe your barbecue down with an onion for an easier and "greener" clean. Rubbing against the grates or the grill with a halved onion facing downwards on a heated grate will easily remove all the grime and grit without having to scrub hard which can be frustrating. Plus it's an affordable green alternative to buying chemicals and pads that produce harsh odors.
