5 Ways to Keep Cool If Your Condo Doesn't Have Air Conditioning

Typical Alberta summers are dry and hot! But since we experience extreme heat for so few weeks per year, only 25% of households actually have air conditioning (Statistics Canada, Alberta, 2013).

When you need to beat the heat, we’ve got you covered. Here are five ways to keep your space cool in the summer when you don’t have air conditioning.

1. Hack your fans

Face your fan out the window: it’ll blow hot air out of the room which gets replaced by cold air coming in.

Set your ceiling fan to rotate counter-clockwise: it’ll cool your room by pushing the air downwards.

2. Close the curtains/blinds during the day

Closing your blinds during the day in the summer helps block out the sun and stop unwanted heat from coming into your home. If you have south and west facing windows, this tip is especially helpful!

3. Unplug unused appliances

Did you know that plugged-in electronics generate heat even when they're not in use? During the summer months, unplug your toaster, coffee maker, chargers and other devices until you're ready to use them again.

4. Chill your bed sheets at night

A couple hours before bed, fold your sheets up and place them in a bag in the fridge. Once they’re chilled, make your bed again and hop in for a cooler start to your sleep.

5. Have a nightly cool-down routine

A few simple ways to bring your temperature down before bed: drink ice water, have a cold shower and sleep with a cold pack on the back of your neck.
