Looking for an easy afternoon activity to do with the kids? Grab some rocks and glow-in-the-dark paint for this craft that the whole family can enjoy even when the sun goes down.
What you'll need
- Rocks
- Newspaper
- Paint brushes
- Kid-safe glow-in-the-dark paint
- Paint primer (optional)
Steps
1) Collect rocks of all shapes and sizes
Grab the kids and get out in nature to search your garden or local park for rocks. A variety of shapes and sizes makes for better painting, but avoid ones with too many cracks or crevices which can prevent the glow-in-the-dark paint from getting enough sunlight.
2) Prepare the rocks for painting
Brush off any excess dirt or dust from your rocks with a dry paintbrush or if you have the time to let them dry, rinse them with a garden hose.
Another optional step is to add a base coat of paint primer to create a blank canvas and help the glow-in-the-dark paint really pop! Make sure to let the primer dry before applying any paint.
3) Set up your workstation
It's best to take this DIY outside to prevent any unwanted paint stains! Lay out your newspaper on a flat surface and arrange the rocks and different paint colours on top of it.
4) Let the little artists loose
Get the creative juices flowing and decorate your rocks with different colours, patterns and designs.
5) Set the rocks in the sun
The last and most important step is to make sure that your rocks get plenty of sunlight so that they glow bright at night. Set them in different spots around your outdoor space and watch them come to life!
Glow-in-the-dark paint, when properly applied, can last several years, making this DIY one that you and your family can enjoy season after season.
