Do you and your device go together like PB&J? If you're like the average and spend at least 34 hours online every week, your device usage is translating into energy usage. Here are some tips to help you reduce energy usage and extend the life of your device and battery.
-
Turn your screen brightness down or enable the auto brightness feature.
The higher the brightness on your screen the more power it's using. Keep your screen brightness down. -
Unplug electronics after you're done using them.
Unplug your TV, console, computer, and other devices when not in use and fully charged. When devices are plugged in, they continue consume energy. -
When using a laptop, use the battery more often.
Use your laptop battery more often and leave it unplugged from the wall. -
Close unused applications, windows and programs.
Make sure to close all your unused windows, applications and programs as they all add up to consume your battery as they work in the background. -
Turn off Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth when not in use.
All of these work in the background and can cause a large drain on your battery, which means charging your devices more often. When you don't need them, shut them off. Switching your phone to airplane mode while charging helps speed up the charging process. -
Reduce screen timeout time.
Reduce your screen timeout time to 5 to 10 seconds so your screen turns off automatically when not use. As a bonus, this will also help preserve your battery life. -
Unplug chargers from the wall when not using them.
We are all guilty of leaving our chargers in the wall when we aren't using them. Even if they aren't connected to a device, they are still using power. -
Use your computer settings to shut down automatically every night.
Most computers allow you to configure your power cycle so that it shuts down on a schedule. Doing so will keep it from running overnight.
