Top 7 Energy Saving Tips for Springtime in Alberta

Last week marked the beginning of spring and while it may still look like winter, warmer days are sure to come. Hooray! With the start of a new season comes a fresh opportunity to improve the energy efficiency and comfort of your home this spring.  Here are our favorite tips:

1. Let the sunshine in – During the day, open blinds and curtains to let sunlight brighten and warm your home.
2. Seal air leaks – Use caulking to seal cracks and openings to prevent air from seeping inside.  Ensure your windows and doors are properly sealed as well since they are the leading cause of leaking air.
3. Clean your sliding glass door tracks - A dirty track can ruin the door's seal and create gaps where heat or cool air can escape.
4. Open windows on warmer days – Springtime in Alberta can bring temperature swings from one day to the next or even throughout the day.  When it's warm, take advantage and open windows for heat. During cooler times, let the fresh air in to naturally humidify your home.
5. Clean your refrigerator coils - Make sure the coils are free from dust and pet hair so air can circulate freely. A long-handled brush is the perfect tool for the job.
6. Keep your ducts dust free – Clear away dust build up inside your registers and ducts to allow air to circulate better throughout your home.
7. Change the direction on your ceiling fan - In winter, let your fan push warm air towards the floor with the fan blades moving clockwise. In spring, switch the direction of your fan to counter clockwise and draw air upwards, cooling the room and ensuring consistent airflow.
