The quality of the air we breathe has a big impact on our health and comfort. Poor air quality can trigger a variety of health issues including itchy eyes, sore throat, allergies, nausea and can affect the health of your lungs over time. This is especially true of the air quality in our homes.

Everything from cleaning supplies to building materials can release pollutants into the air, but you can fight back with these tips for naturally purifying your home.

1.   Add air-purifying houseplants

The best all-natural air filters, houseplants are an easy and low-cost addition that filter out pollutants and toxic chemicals from the air. Not convinced? Just ask NASA.

In 1989, NASA conducted a study to find the most effective indoor plants for purifying the air and released a list of the top contenders. Boston Fern, Peace Lily, Bamboo Palm and Spider Plants are just a few types of houseplants that you can easily find in Alberta. They recommend two average-size air-purifying plants per 100 sq. ft. of home.

2.   Burn beeswax candles

Did you know that beeswax candles are natural air purifiers? Swap out your regular paraffin or scented candles for 100% beeswax to ionize the air and remove contaminants such as pollen, dust, dirt and other pollutants.

As an added bonus, beeswax candles burn more slowly and with almost no smoke or scent, while paraffin candles release benzene, toluene and soot into the air as they burn.

 3.   Use natural, non-toxic cleaners

Steering clear of harmful cleaning products and chemicals will help to keep the air inside your home clean and healthy. Soaps, polishes and wipes often include harmful chemicals that can contribute to chronic respiratory problems, headaches and allergic reactions.

For an effective alternative to ammonia-based cleaners, give white vinegar and baking soda a try, or pick up a variety of eco-friendly products from your local grocery or hardware store.

4.   Groom your furry family members

A common misconception is that pet dander is pet hair, but it's really microscopic skin cells from our pets. These particles can remain suspended in the air for long periods of time, affecting the quality of the air in your home. Regular grooming and washing your pet's bedding and other upholstered areas that they frequent can help cut down on dander.

5.   Take care when decorating

Plastic shower curtains, flooring, carpet and paint can all contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic pollutants that are released into the air by everyday household items. Make sure to always choose products with low VOCs and increase ventilation when using products that emit these compounds. While you can't get rid of them entirely, you can greatly improve air quality inside your home by being conscious about what you're bringing inside.

With a few simple changes, you can naturally improve the quality of the air that you and your family breathe. Looking for more easy hacks to use at home? Check out our blog!
