When you compare electricity rates in Alberta, it is important to understand that you have the power to choose how you buy electricity from Alberta electricity retailers. You can sign up with a competitive retailer, like Encor by EPCOR for your home or business, or you can choose to stay on the regulated rate option. Home electricity prices and average electricity rates vary depending on which you decide to go with, and whether you choose a fixed rate plan or a floating (variable) rate plan.

A fixed electricity rate provides the predictability and peace of mind of a stable electricity price throughout the term of your energy plan. While the market fluctuates, your price remains constant. Because your consumption varies from month to month, your energy charge will too. However, your unit price won't. Electricity prices for a fixed rate plan are based on a competitive per kilowatt hour (kWh) rate.
Fixed rates are ideal if you want to minimize changes/fluctuations in your energy charges from month to month. But because future prices and consumption are unknown, extra risk margin is built into fixed rates to cover retailer costs.

A floating electricity rate is based on market prices, so the rate for a month is determined after the month has passed. So, while the billing will come in a bit later, all the same benefits of Encor apply. With our floating plans, you always pay the market rate.
