The communities we serve are very diverse, and we know that not everyone has access to the support and opportunities they need to reach their full potential. It’s one of the reasons team EPCOR cares so much about giving back.
What we don’t always expect is that we’ll be the ones who grow, but that’s exactly what Shirley Kwan, corporate mentor for BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area (BGCBigs), discovered when she participated in the joint program with EPCOR.
EPCOR started working with BGCBigs in 2015 to help families in our home community of Edmonton. Throughout the years, our partnership with BGCBigs has evolved, and we now support three different programs:
Each program provides support and opportunities that make a meaningful difference for children and their families. But one program stands out above the rest for Team EPCOR volunteers—the Corporate Mentorship Program.
The Corporate Mentorship program has a widespread impact, connecting local students with EPCOR employees for weekly lunch-hour mentorship sessions at five of our worksites. For Shirley, joining the program was a meaningful way to reconnect with volunteering.
With kids of her own who are around the same age as the mentees, Shirley had an idea of what the mentorship would look like. Or at least, that’s what she thought.
“What I discovered was so much more than a simple volunteer opportunity," explains Shirley. “These sessions are the highlight of my week and a source of unexpected personal growth."
Shirley mentors two children—one shy and competitive, the other energetic and creative. Thanks to the structure of the program, she’s able to connect with both in ways that feel natural and rewarding.
“Every child is different, but it’s incredibly fulfilling to get to know them and watch them blossom week after week.”
One of her most memorable moments came when her shy mentee played checkers for the first time—and won. That small victory sparked a big breakthrough. It was the first time that Shirley’s mentee really opened up to her, and their relationship grew from there.
“She's so proud that she's good at this game, and she rarely loses," noted Shirley. “The one time I did win, she let me know, in no uncertain terms, that it wasn't going to happen again. I love her confidence."
The beauty of the BGCBigs Corporate Mentorship Program lies in its simplicity. Mentors spend one lunch hour a week with their mentees, participating in structured activities that make it easy to build trust and let relationships develop naturally.
“Meaningful connection doesn't require grand gestures or specialized expertise—just your authentic presence and willingness to show up consistently,” says Shirley.
Even when mentors are away, the program is designed to be flexible. Other volunteers can step in, and the kids are comfortable working with them.

Shirley’s story is just one example of how small, consistent acts of mentorship can create lasting impact for both the mentee and the mentor.
“Every child deserves champions in their corner, and BGCBigs makes it possible for you to be that person," says Shirley. “Looking back, I realize that while I signed up hoping to make a difference in a child's life, I never expected how much fulfillment, joy, and perspective I would gain in return."
Through our partnership with BGCBigs, EPCOR is supporting programs that help young people feel seen, supported, and empowered to reach their potential. Together, we’re shaping a stronger, more compassionate community.
There are lots of opportunities to change the lives of youth (and yours!) by volunteering with BGCBigs. Start your own journey today.
