How EPCOR is responding to heat wave impacts on Edmonton's electrical system

As western Canada continues to experience a record-setting heat wave, EPCOR wants to reassure customers that we continue to provide safe, reliable power.
PublishedJune 30, 2021

Our electrical system is designed to handle a wide variety of conditions. However, consecutive days of exceedingly hot, humid conditions like we are currently seeing can affect the performance of power equipment and can lead to power outages. We have a dedicated team watching the situation closely and are prepared to take steps as needed. We are monitoring our system and making adjustments in response to hot weather conditions and customer demand. We also have crews and staff available 24/7 throughout the week and have shifted resourcing to ensure we are well equipped to respond to an evolving situation.

We are also ready to follow any directives we receive from the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) related to the province's power grid. Along with other power distribution providers in the province, EPCOR works with the AESO to help manage Alberta's electricity consumption and support electrical needs for essential power services. At this time, no AESO alerts are in place, and they continue to encourage Albertans to conserve electricity.

We are joining the AESO in encouraging Edmontonians to reduce their power use, especially during peak hours of 4 to 9 p.m. Steps customers can take include: turning off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances; minimizing the use of air conditioners; and limiting the use of major power-consuming equipment such as dishwashers and washers and dryers. Find more tips on how to conserve energy.

We also encourage customers to be prepared for power outages given the potential for current conditions to affect the performance of electrical equipment. This includes having an emergency kit prepared and easily accessible. Find out more information, including on how to sign up for power outage alerts
