Wood burning vs. natural gas fire pits: Which one is eco-friendlier?

It's not a true Alberta summer without s'mores by the fire! If you're planning to heat things up with an outdoor fire pit, consider the environmental impact when choosing between wood-burning or natural gas.

Fire pit smoke

Some people believe that wood smoke is harmless because it’s a natural substance, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Wood smoke contains harmful chemicals and gases, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, all of which can have serious health effects. Breathing in wood smoke can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. In extreme cases, prolonged exposure can lead to chronic lung disease and even cancer1. Burning natural gas, on the other hand, does not produce harmful smoke or ash2.

Greenhouse gases

Not only does wood smoke contain harmful gases, it also releases soot, fine particles and smog-causing nitrogen oxides that damage the environment3. Natural gas burns cleaner than wood and most fossil fuels, meaning it emits fewer greenhouse gases4.

Fire hazards

A natural gas fire pit offers a lower risk of accidental fires, as the flames can be turned off instantly with the flick of a switch. In contrast, wood fire pits require careful tending. If used irresponsibly, they can quickly get out of hand and are difficult to extinguish. Additionally, airborne embers from wood fires can ignite dry grass, leaves or even tree branches1.

The verdict

For a safe and eco-friendly outdoor fire, a natural gas fire pit is the way to go. Available in a range of prices, sizes and tyles, you’re sure to find one that fits both your budget and your backyard.
