Moving? Here’s your stress-free checklist

Whether you’re moving across the city or province, one thing is for sure: it always takes more time (and more tape) than you think. The good news? With a little planning and a few smart hacks, you can make the process a whole lot smoother.

Plan your move

Start early and set deadlines. Future you will be thankful. Create a master checklist that includes not just the basics (like booking movers and gathering supplies), but smaller details that save time, money, and stress.

Here are a few planning tips that go beyond the obvious:

  • Create a moving-day essentials box with must-haves for your first night.
  • Snap photos of your place before you leave (especially if you’re renting). It’s handy if there are questions about damage deposits.
  • Schedule a donation pickup for large items a few days before your move. Many organizations offer this for free.
  • Use your freezer strategically. Stop grocery shopping 1–2 weeks before your move and use up what you have. You’ll waste less and transport less.

Pack like a pro

Packing takes time, but it doesn’t have to take your sanity. A few clever tricks can help you pack smarter.

  • Garbage bags = instant garment bags. Keep clothes on hangers, slip a garbage bag over them, and they’re ready to hang in your new closet.
  • Use plastic wrap to seal drawers. No need to pack or unpack. Just wrap drawers shut or individually for easier lifting.
  • Pack plates vertically like records. They’re less likely to break this way than when stacked flat. Use soft items like dish towels or t-shirts between each.
  • Take photos of the back of your electronics before unplugging them. When it’s time to reconnect your TV or gaming system, you’ll thank yourself.

Update your address and transfer utilities

It’s not the most glamorous part of moving, but it’s one of the most important. Getting paperwork and utilities sorted early means fewer surprises when you settle in.

  • Start with the big ones like Canada Post, your bank, and insurance providers.
  • Notify utility providers at least two weeks before your move-in date.
  • Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration.
  • Don’t forget streaming services, loyalty programs, and online shopping profiles.

Pro tip: Scan the past year of your bank or credit card statements to uncover sneaky subscriptions (hello, that free trial you forgot to cancel).

Cleaning up before and after

A clean exit (and entrance) goes a long way. If you’re renting, it can mean getting your deposit back. If you’re selling, it’s a courtesy that avoids last-minute texts from your realtor.

Here’s a quick checklist with a few often-overlooked spots:

  • Dust ceiling fans and vents.
  • Wipe down light switches, doorknobs, and cabinet handles.
  • Fill and touch up small nail holes.
  • Vacuum behind your kitchen appliances.

Don’t forget your new place! Bring a small cleaning kit for move-in day: disinfectant wipes, glass cleaner, a sponge or cloth, paper towels, and garbage bags. A quick wipe-down of shelves, counters, and bathrooms makes your first night feel a whole lot better.

Moving day essentials

Pack one box (or duffel bag) with everything you’ll want easy access to in the first 24 hours:

  • Toilet paper, hand soap, and toiletries
  • A change of clothes and pajamas
  • Basic cleaning supplies and paper towels
  • Phone chargers, extension cords or power bar
  • Snacks and drinks (and coffee!)
  • Pet food and supplies
  • A few plates and utensils
  • Shower curtain and towel
  • Scissors or a utility knife
  • Important documents (ID, lease, etc.)
  • Small toolkit or multi-tool
  • Trash bags

Label this box clearly and keep it with you - ideally in your car or by the door - so it doesn’t disappear into the moving truck.
