Spring cleaning your closet: Refresh your space (and mind)

Spring’s finally in the air, and with it comes that undeniable urge to fling open the windows and freshen everything up, including your closet. Whether you're gearing up for warmer days or just tired of rummaging through a wardrobe full of “meh,” a little seasonal decluttering can go a long way.

Start small with a quick win

Before you dive into a full-on closet overhaul, give yourself an easy victory. Do a five-minute sweep for anything stained, torn, or long past its prime. You’ll clear space quickly and build momentum for the rest of the job.

Use the “one-year” rule (with a little wiggle room)

If you haven’t worn it in the last year, chances are you won’t miss it. There are always exceptions (hello, formalwear), but most everyday items fall into the love-it-or-leave-it category. When in doubt, toss it in a “maybe” pile and circle back later with fresh eyes.

Sort with purpose: Keep, donate, sell, or reuse

  • Keep what fits, feels good and works for your current life.
  • Donate gently used pieces that someone else could enjoy.
  • Sell quality items through consignment shops or apps.
  • Reuse worn-out or stained textiles as rags before throwing them out for good.

Bonus: Keeping clothes out of landfills isn’t just good karma, it’s good for the environment, too. Less waste = less environmental impact.

Reorganize to make mornings easier

Now that you’ve cleared the clutter, make your closet work with you, not against you. Keep everyday items at eye level, fold bulky sweaters and use bins or boxes for accessories. You’ll save a bit of energy (literally and figuratively) when you’re not digging through piles or running last-minute laundry.

Keep the momentum going

The best part of a spring refresh is that it doesn’t have to stop in your closet. Reclaiming your space can spark all kinds of feel-good habits, from downsizing digital clutter to being more intentional with your energy use at home. It’s all connected and it all adds up.

Final thought

Spring cleaning isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating space for what matters most. A lighter closet means a lighter mental load, and that’s always in season.
