Seven energy savings tips for spring in Alberta

This month marks the beginning of spring and while it may still look like winter, warmer days are sure to come. With the start of a new season comes a fresh opportunity to improve the energy efficiency and comfort of your home.  Here are our favourite tips this spring:

1. Let the sunshine in – During the day, open blinds and curtains to let sunlight brighten and warm your home. Close blinds and curtains when the sun goes down to save energy.

2. Seal air leaks – Use caulking to seal cracks and openings to prevent air from seeping inside.  Ensure your windows and doors are properly sealed, as they are the leading cause of leaking air.

3. Clean your sliding glass door and window tracks - A dirty track can ruin the seal and create gaps where heat or cool air can escape.

4. Open windows on warmer days – Springtime in Alberta can bring temperature swings from one day to the next or even throughout the day.

When it's warm, take advantage and open windows for heat. During cooler times, let the fresh air in to naturally humidify your home.

5. Clean your refrigerator coils - Make sure the coils are free from dust and pet hair so air can circulate freely. A long-handled brush is the perfect tool for the job.

6. Keep your ducts dust free – Clear away dust build up inside your registers and ducts to allow air to circulate better throughout your home.

7. Change the direction on your ceiling fan - In winter, your fan pushes warm air towards the floor with the fan blades moving clockwise. In spring, switch the direction of your fan to counterclockwise so air draws upwards, cooling the room and ensuring consistent airflow.
