From packing up to plugging in: Moving electronics and appliances safely

Pack electronics with extra protection

Electronics like TVs, computer monitors, laptops, gaming consoles and speakers can be easily damaged by impact, pressure or jostling during a move, so pack them carefully.

Original packaging is ideal if you still have it, but sturdy boxes with plenty of cushioning work, too. Wrap items individually, fill empty space so they can’t shift around and clearly label boxes containing fragile items. When loading up for the move, keep these boxes upright and avoid stacking heavy items on top of them.

Keep cords organized

A tangled pile of mystery cords is probably not what you want to deal with when you’re unpacking in your new home.

Disconnect removable cords when possible, coil them loosely, and put them in individual resealable bags. Label each bag with the device it belongs to and pack them in the same box as their corresponding electronics.

For appliances with attached cords, loosely coil and secure the cord so it doesn’t get pinched or damaged during the move.

Prep appliances and lamps before packing

Before packing small appliances, make sure they’re clean and empty, and remove any loose or detachable parts, like blender jars, microwave trays or coffee maker carafes. Wrap breakable pieces separately and pack them with the appliance so everything stays together.

For lamps, remove light bulbs and shades and wrap each piece separately. Avoid packing heavy items alongside lamps or shades that could crush or break them during the move.

Keep electrical items dry

Water and electrical items are never a good combination. Make sure electronics and appliances are completely dry before packing, and protect boxes from rain, snow and other moisture while loading, transporting and unloading them.

If an electrical item gets wet during the move, don’t plug it in. Allow it to dry completely and, if you suspect moisture has gotten inside, have it inspected before using it.

Check cords and devices as you unpack

Moving is a great opportunity to give your electrical items a quick once-over. Before plugging them in at your new home, check cords, plugs, electronics, and appliances for damage.

If you notice fraying, exposed wires, cracked plugs, or other damage, don’t plug the item in. Replace damaged cords or have the device inspected or repaired by a qualified professional.

Don’t forget to move your energy plan, too
