So, you have questions about the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR) and what this means for you? We get it, it’s complicated. And we assume you have more important things to spend your time on, than reading about electricity and natural gas. Whether you’re new to Alberta’s energy market or simply trying to make sense of your options, we’re here to help.
We’ve compiled some frequently asked questions and created this cheat sheet to help you navigate the changes.
Here are some of the questions this article will answer:
Here’s what you need to know—and how Encor can make energy easy, flexible and rewarding.
For years, many Albertans have been on the Regulated Rate Option (RRO), a government-reviewed electricity rate that fluctuates monthly based on the market. Starting January 2025, the RRO transitioned to the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR). The RoLR offers a fixed rate for two years instead of changing every month. While this brings some stability to your electricity bill, the RoLR is designed to be a default option and is not necessarily the best choice for your budget.
If you were on the Regulated Rate Option, you will have been automatically transitioned to the Rate of Last Resort. Those Albertans who haven’t signed an electricity contract with a competitive retailer like Encor by EPCOR, are on the RoLR. In Edmonton, EPCOR provides the regulated services for electricity. While EPCOR is Encor’s parent company, we are different and offer different services and rates to you!
Here’s the key: If you haven’t made an active choice to get on an energy plan, you are on the default rate which is the RoLR. If you want to be sure, check your current bill and see if there’s any reference to “Rate of Last Resort” or “RoLR” on it. The good news is you have the freedom to choose a competitive energy plan that could provide better value, lower overall costs and even perks.
Competitive plans aren’t just about the rates—they’re about the entire experience. Here’s why Encor stands out:
While some rates might look lower at first glance, it’s the total cost—including admin fees and flexibility—that matters. When you add up the admin fees and extra charges, Encor’s electricity plans come out amongst the major utilities as one of the most affordable in the market.
At Encor, perks aren’t just an add-on—they’re a huge part of what we offer. From exclusive events to exciting contests (like free energy for a year) and giveaways, we’re here to make your experience rewarding by giving you even more value.
Switch or cancel your plan anytime without penalties, giving you control over your energy choices.
Our team knows Alberta because we’re from here! We’re committed to helping you understand your energy that’s why our energy experts are just a call away – whether you have questions or need help setting up a plan we’re here to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Choosing the right energy plan isn’t just about rates. At Encor, we focus on total value—combining competitive rates, Alberta’s lowest admin fees, and perks that make your energy plan extra rewarding.
Check your bill today: If your current electricity rate is higher than 8.78¢/kWh, and if you’re ready for a plan that offers energy with extra perks, visit Encor by EPCOR or call 310-4300 to switch in minutes. Compared to the RoLR, you could be saving hundreds on your energy bill a year, so the sooner you get started, the better.
