Energy efficiency tips for fall in Alberta

Brr, Winter always comes too early in Alberta! With the days getting shorter and colder, we would like to share some great tips on saving energy this Fall.

Replace your furnace filter

A clean air filter allows your furnace to run more efficiently and will also help improve air quality in your home. Fall is a great time to change the filter in your furnace as the summer months in Alberta can be very dusty.

Seal leaks around doors and windows

Use caulking to seal cracks and openings to help prevent cold air from seeping into your home.  Improperly sealed windows and doors are the leading cause of heat loss in homes.

Don't block your vents

Blocked vents make your furnace work harder than it needs to and reduce the amount of warm air that circulates in your home.  Plan where you locate your furniture so that vents are free from obstruction.

Take advantage of your curtains and shades

During the day, open the curtains on your windows to absorb heat from the sun's natural rays.  Pull them closed again when the sun goes down to help retain the heat from the day.

Consider getting a smart thermostat

A smart thermostat can help you control your heating and cooling by automatically learning your schedule or allowing you to control your home temperature while away. This feature of smart thermostats is ideal for when your schedule changes on the fly.

Turn outdoor water pipes off

Remember to turn off the water lines that lead to the outside of your home, as they can easily freeze when the temperature drops overnight.  It is also recommended that you unhook and drain your garden hose to avoid damage caused by freezing temperatures.

Ensure your home is properly insulated

Alberta's winters bring extremely cold temperatures. Make sure your home is properly insulated in places such as attics, outside walls and the basement as these are other areas where heat can escape.
