Regina

EPCOR owns and operates Regina’s wastewater treatment plant, which was expanded and upgraded in 2017. Today the facility treats more than 25 billion litres of wastewater each year before returning it safely to Wascana Creek.

Services provided

  • Wastewater treatment
  • Hauled wastewater collection and treatment

About the system

The Regina Wastewater Treatment plan is a Level IV system with a maximum capacity of 156 megalitres per day. It uses a biological nutrient removal treatment process as well as ultraviolet light disinfection. The removed biosolids are stored in a repurposed vacant lagoon.

The plant’s effluent is discharged into Wascana Creek. EPCOR collaborates with local, provincial and federal governments to make sure all regulatory and environmental requirements are met or exceeded.

Operating model

EPCOR operates the plant under a design-build-finance-operate model with a 30 year term, expiring in 2044. EPCOR is also responsible for the operations and maintenance of the facility.

Recognition

  • 2018: ISO 14001: 2015 certified environmental management system
  • 2017: Western Canada Water "Exceptional Municipal Project Award"
  • 2016: United Way "Rising Star Award" for the plant's significant fundraising efforts
  • 2016: ISO/IEC 17025:2005 registered from the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA)
