On a High Note

"I've moved ten times, have been enrolled in three different schools and have gone through all these life changes, but band has always been a constant." Meet Stephanie, a Service Consultant at EPCOR who knows it's the connections you make that truly matter.

"I can say 'this one time at band camp and actually have a story to back it up," jokes Stephanie, recalling one of many musical milestones. "I've moved ten times, have been enrolled in three different schools and have gone through all these life changes, but band has always been a constant."

As a baritone and euphonium player with Mill Creek and Mission Hill, Stephanie's self-proclaimed "band geek" status is over a decade in the making. After years of private lessons, cross-country travelling, and lifelong friendships forged, she can't imagine a life without the pursuit of her passions.

"One of my absolute favourite memories is when we had our full brass band, a soprano singer, an amazing trumpet player, Edmonton's Ukrainian Male Chorus and the organ going all at once in the Winspear Centre," she shares, hands animated with excitement. "I could literally feel my heart beating in tune with the notes. It was glorious."

At home, Stephanie's passion transcends the stage. While practicing almost every morning before work, she uses a mute so that the light fixtures don't rattle. "I'm always thinking: don't make the next-door neighbours dog bark," she laughs. "Brass instruments have a much warmer sound than most, but it can take years of practice to connect with instruments that are so unique."

While working at EPCOR, Stephanie sets the stage much the same. "Every day, every caller, and every call is different," she says, explaining the most challenging but also the most satisfying part of her day. "I may not be able to change a caller's current situation, but I can certainly help them find a way to start."

That's how she approaches every day and each new composition. Whether it's assisting callers, practicing, or playing for local crowds, Stephanie's passionate personality shines.

When it comes to the value of music, she says, "the notes are only part of it."

"It's the connections you make that truly matter."
