EDMONTON, AB – Charging an electric vehicle in Edmonton just got easier, with the newest additions to the community’s roster of electric vehicle (EV) charging locations. As part of the Energizing Edmonton project, Encor by EPCOR is installing and energizing 24 new EV chargers for drivers to power up their vehicles for free at eight accessible sites throughout the city.

“Rolling out more options for drivers looking to support a greener future is what Energizing Edmonton is all about,” said Stuart Lee, EPCOR President & CEO. “The new EV charging sites were selected in collaboration with our partners at the City of Edmonton – keeping the needs of drivers top of mind. And not only are these chargers conveniently located in all quadrants of the city; commuters can plug in for free.”

This infrastructure is providing more options for drivers — key to supporting the transition to cleaner forms of transportation. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is supporting the drive to increase EV infrastructure in Alberta as part of its Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP). NRCan provided EPCOR with a total investment of $210,000 to install the 24 chargers in Edmonton.

NRCan created ZEVIP to help meet the Government of Canada’s target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. A critical component in achieving this target is to encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles through the rollout of more convenient, accessible EV charging stations.

“We’re giving Canadians the greener options they want to get to where they need to go. We’re building a coast-to-coast network of electric vehicle charging stations from St. John’s to Victoria, and now we’re building more right here in Alberta. This is how we get to net-zero by 2050,” said the Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources.

“Today, EPCOR and I unveiled 24 new electric vehicle chargers in Edmonton, supported by $210,000 from our government. Through investments like these, we are helping Albertans to drive towards a prosperous net-zero future, while saving money at the pump,” said the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Associate Minister of Finance, Minister of Tourism and Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre.

The Energizing Edmonton project is a 10-year partnership between Encor by EPCOR and the City of Edmonton, focused on the installation of community EV chargers at key locations throughout the city.

• Terwillegar Recreation Centre at 2051 Leger Rd NW (Level 2 – 4 chargers)
• Meadows Recreation Centre at 2704-17 St NW (Level 2 – 4 chargers)
• Edmonton Convention Centre at 9711 Grierson Hill (Level 2 – 4 chargers)
• EPCOR’s Hugh J. Bolton building at 12116-107 St NW (Level 2 – 4 chargers)
• Blatchford (coming soon) (Level 3 – 1 charger)

These new chargers are in addition to Encor by EPCOR’s first EV charging station installed outside the Kinsmen Sports Centre in 2019.

Quick facts:   

• Encor by EPCOR’s EV community charging stations are Level 2 and Level 3 chargers.
• Level 2 chargers can charge two vehicles at the same time and provide approximately 40 km of range for each hour of charging.
• Level 3 chargers can charge one vehicle at a time and provide approximately 300 km of range for each hour of charging.
• Emissions from the transportation sector generate more than 25 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions; with light-duty vehicles contributing to half that total.
• Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is key to EPCOR’s ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) commitments and the company is on track to meet its target of a 50 per cent reduction in its net emissions by 2025.​​
