Bringing free family-friendly entertainment to the downtown core, with a focus on emerging and marginalized artists, and with the goal of enriching inner-city neighborhoods. The Heart + Soul funding will go toward artist and technical production fees.
On the second and third Fridays and all Saturday evenings, Teatro’s main stage performances will be followed by live music in the beautiful Varscona Theatre Lobby. Patrons can enjoy a nightcap and effervescent hour of delightful melodies, led by musical theatre maven Kate Ryan and featuring a delightful line up of emerging and traditionally underrepresented musicians and singers. Admission to these concerts is free, with an option to donate (25 percent of all donations will go to charities selected by the artists). Heart + Soul funding will support artist fees, and rapid tests.
La Cité will present a concert series on 27 Thursday nights in 2022, with artists from an array of musical styles and cultural backgrounds. Heart + Soul funding will go toward performers and artists, an in-house cultural manager and theatre technician, promotion and marketing.
Running across three stages, the festival serves up top-notch improv, sketch, musical and stand-up comedy featuring local, national and international talent. The festival also includes workshops for the public and emerging artists on musical comedy, stand-up comedy, improv, magic and sketch comedy. Heart + Soul funding will go toward paying for local artists, technicians, security, safety and production costs.
Common Ground Arts Society prioritizes grassroots work from Edmonton-based creators who have been previously excluded or marginalized by the Edmonton arts profession. The Found Festival will introduce audiences to some of Edmonton's most talented and diverse musicians. In addition to the musical performances, programming will include opening night land ceremony with dignitaries, blessings from community Elders and Indigenous performers, a visual arts installation by iHuman Youth Society, and a pride-themed projection background from queer designer Mackenzie Bedford. Heart + Soul funding will go toward musician fees, curator, technical staff and ceremonial costs.
World Music Week is back for a second year with an expanded offering of local musical acts from various cultural backgrounds in concert at the Heritage Amphitheatre. Heart + Soul funds will go toward paying local artists.
Local community parades will be delivered in nine Edmonton communities whose residents may not have the ability to make it down to the festival at Sir Winston Churchill Square. Heart + Soul funds will go towards artist fees, with the remainder supporting general parade delivery costs.
In mindful consultation with Indigenous leaders and artists, Fringe Theatre is evolving its sustainable Indigenous Innovation program to elevate Indigenous voices and storytelling during the 41st Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. Heart + Soul funding will help support pêhonân, Fringe’s indigenous-led and Indigenous-centerd community gathering space, as well as cover fees for artists, technicians, a producer, and production manager. Funding will also help provide resources for an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper from Enoch Cree Nation to help raise a teepee in the heart of the festival site.
Not everyone can travel to the Winspear Center, but that shouldn't stop them from enjoying live music. ESO Outdoors, part of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra's “summer season,” was introduced during the pandemic and consists of eight concerts delivered across Edmonton. Heart + Soul funding will go towards production costs and musicians.
This initiative will help develop selected playwrights through a guided and supportive group environment, culminating in participants having finished a production-ready script. The playwrights' unit will empower artists to secure funding from government and private sources for their premieres, and furnish them with the skills and contacts they will need to put together professional artistic teams. Funding will go toward compensating the playwrights and artist facilitators.
Light Strikes is a creation and presentation of animated Indigenous visual artworks, projected and video-mapped onto unique and various surfaces set to Indigenous music and poetry for a live spectacle, and online viewing. EPCOR funded earlier phases of the project, and now is supporting phase 4 which will see the videos mapped onto multiple sides of Edmonton buildings with more projectors, and the addition of live performance art and the presentation narrative, culminating in a live presentation and fundraising event in September. Money will go toward artists and production fees, equipment rentals, COVID measures, marketing and advertising.
The Strathearn Art Walk and Music Festival is a free, family-friendly annual celebration of the arts, including musical performers from many cultural backgrounds, a local artisan market and art displays. Funds will go toward musicians, a festival producer, and promotion and marketing.
In 2021, The Citadel experienced how one positive COVID case in the cast or crew can cause the postponement or cancellation of productions, resulting in significant revenue loss and loss of working shifts for Citadel employees that support the productions. Heart + Soul funds will be used to support the costs associated with hiring understudies to help safeguard against a potential closure for the season opening production of Network.
The Edmonton Comedy Festival will stage world-class comedy shows at venues across Edmonton, bringing awareness to Canadian comedians and developing and nurturing local talent. Heart + Soul funding will help cover performance fees for comedians and venue rentals.
The Emerging Artistic Producer Program will give hands-on arts administration experience to Indigenous, black, and people of color who identify as women, trans and/or non-binary people. The two-phase development program, will include a series of seminars and paid practicum placements with local arts organizations. Funding will go toward participant contract fees to set them up for success.
For its 10th anniversary festival, Thousand Faces will present multidisciplinary, multicultural mythological performances in Edmonton parks, indoor venues and schools. Its signature events will include A String of Mythic Pearls (Oct 14 and 15), and the new CanNatyam Festival of South Asian Dance (Sept 30 and Oct 2). Heart + Soul funding will be used to pay local artists to create new work, technical and design costs, as well as marketing and outreach efforts.
As part of ESFF's 10th year anniversary, they are celebrating with an evening of laughter. While they already offer free community screenings year-round, offering a consecutive three-day event opens the door to additional grants and sponsorship opportunities, thus helping to sustain the annual festival. At the October 14 event, they will feature local Indigenous comedian Howie Miller and a selection of their favourite film comedies from the archives. EPCOR's support means artists, an arts venue and specialized arts technicians to be paid fairly and keeping the event affordable to the community to attend.
In collaboration with Métis dance artist and DJ Matthew Wood (aka Creeasian), Edmonton’s Indigenous Artist-in-Residence, BWDC will produce a weekend festival of urban Indigenous dance at Edmonton’s Orange Hub. Professional guest artists will perform and engage in dialogue and workshops with emerging Indigenous artists selected to participate, mentoring them to present their own individual work in an emerging artists showcase to close the festival. Matthew Wood will serve as artistic director and will be mentored throughout the process by BWDC artistic director Brian Webb, who has more than 40 years' experience as a dance artist and administrator. Heart + Soul funds will go towards artists.

After two years of virtual Laughs Over Lunch, this year’s fundraiser will be held in person at the JW Marriott downtown. The goal is to raise at least $100,000, with proceeds supporting the Stronger Futures Fund, which ensures Terra programs and services continue serving teen parents. Heart + Soul funds will be presented as a special matching opportunity for gifts of $500 or more.
Edmonton Meals on Wheels client base has nearly doubled during the pandemic. In 2021, the organization served more than 300,000 meals to 4,600 people. Heart + Soul funds will match donations as part of a direct mail and social media campaign.
The second annual WINGMAN campaign will showcase high-profile Edmonton-based influencers who are taking a stand against domestic violence in our community. A new WINGMAN will be profiled every day throughout September, with a call to action to raise funds. EPCOR will match donations up to a total of $20,000. Funds raised will support trauma informed programs and support services offered to the families that are fleeing domestic violence and living at WINGS, which include: counseling, onsite daycare, children's programs, life skills building, education sessions, nutritious snacks and warm meals.
inVisible Persons: Stories of Poverty & Homelessness is a fundraising event focused on bringing the voices of those Boyle Street serves to the forefront of discussions related to the experience of poverty and homelessness. The anchor of the event is a screening of the “InVisible Persons” project, a powerful series of interviews filmed by Boyle Street staff to give a platform to the “hidden” and “invisible” population of Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton) in a context that was co-designed with the participants. EPCOR will be the main sponsor of the event, helping to cover the costs of planning and executing the event. Funds raised will go toward the drop-in center which provides warm meals, clothing, and a welcoming and supportive environment where the next steps toward breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness can be taken.
The Zebra Center provides a continuum of collaborative support to children and youth from Edmonton and surrounding communities who have experienced abuse. When abuse is reported, its multi-disciplinary team of experts reviews the case and implements a customized plan for support, which may include intervention, disclosure and navigating the justice system, as well as individual and family therapeutic supports and resources. In 2021, 3,844 kids and young people were helped. The 20th anniversary of the Zebra Center will be marked in October with an open house and soirée event to connect and re-connect with the community and to raise funds. Heart + Soul funds will be used to match donations at the event.
The goal of this annual fundraiser is to raise $110,000 to provide more than 42,000 meals to the hungry this fall. Radio DJs with CISN 103.9 will be outdoors on the football field of Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium, broadcasting live and moving one yard down for every $1,000 raised. They won’t leave the field until all the money is raised! Heart + Soul funding will be used to match donations.
Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters will conduct a matching campaign to incentivize new donors to join the work to end violence against women, children and seniors. EPCOR will match donations up to a total of $20,000, and funds will ultimately go toward initiatives such as worksite domestic violence responder training, enhancing economic security for women in the shelter, expanding the children’s curriculum, and expanding work to support Truth and Reconciliation.
The Christmas Bureau will kick-off their holiday campaign with a launch event to engage partners, bring profile to the needs of Edmontonians, and build awareness of the organization’s programs and how to seek support. EPCOR will cover launch event costs, and match donations up to a total of $10,000 to help kick start the campaign. Funds raised will ultimately go toward providing holiday food hampers for families experiencing financial difficulty, and holiday gift cards for the Adopt-A-Teen program.
The Food Bank continues to see record numbers of people needing food assistance. It serves more than 26,000 people a month and provides meals and snacks to more than 300 community agency partners. A multi-day fundraising campaign will be promoted by CBC Edmonton. Heart + Soul funds will be used as a matching donation on a specific day of the campaign.
This fundraiser will support YWCA’s violence prevention and recovery programs, which provide critical help to thousands of Edmontonians a year. Throughout the campaign, the YWCA will share stories, statistics and ways for Edmontonians to get involved and take action on gender-based violence. Heart + Soul funds will be used to support the Rose Campaign Breakfast in December.
All children deserve a healthy start to their day. Money raised by this campaign will provide nutritious meals to the children who attend the Bissell Center Early Childhood Development Center. The kids who attend the daycare are part of families who are working their way out of poverty. Heart + Soul funds will be used as a matching donation for the campaign, which will run on Giving Tuesday.
YESS will conduct a matching campaign as part of their annual December campaign. EPCOR will match donations up to a total of $20,000, and the funds raised will ultimately go toward supporting the critical needs of homeless and vulnerable youth.
Free Play for Kids protects and promotes the social, mental, emotional and physical well-being of vulnerable children and youth in Edmonton. It provides barrier-free opportunities for vulnerable kids and youth to play and learn skills after school five days a week, while incorporating activities that support participants’ social inclusion and sense of belonging, their mental/emotional health, their physical activity literacy and food security, and their leadership and job skills — so they can become leaders in their communities. Free Play will conduct an online web and social media-based fundraising campaign with the goal of addressing the increased cost to provide wrap-around services to each child. Heart + Soul funds will be used to match donations.
