Parkallen Flood Mitigation Project

The Parkallen Flood Mitigation Project was initiated with the objective of reducing the risk of flooding during high-intensity, low-frequency rainfall events. The selected concept included two dry ponds: one in the school site, and one in Ellingson Park, as well as two sewer upgrade areas, located in separate parts of the neighbourhood.

The dry ponds are stormwater management facilities which have been designed to stay dry and only begin to fill with water in large rain events when the stormwater system cannot handle the water volumes. During heavy storm events, the ponds act as storage facilities. The water will then drain from the dry ponds into the downstream stormwater system when there is capacity. The dry ponds will help reduce pooling of water on the streets, flooding of manholes, and the risk of basement flooding.

The project has been successfully completed and the storm system is fully operational.

Dry ponds and other restricted areas

The construction of the dry ponds has been completed. The U9 and U11 soccer fields and the supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA) has been installed in the dry ponds. SCADA is a computer system for gathering and analyzing real time data, which includes warning devices in the pond's drainage grates that notify EPCOR when it is filling with water. EPCOR staff can be dispatched as necessary to ensure the site is safe and that no one is using the facilities while it is filling.

An inspection of the landscaping was completed by the City of Edmonton, and another inspection will be done in 2022 to check the establishment of the trees. Snow fence will be installed around specific sections of landscaping, mostly trees, to ensure these areas are protected until the next inspection in fall 2022. Residents are asked not to remove the fencing or access the fenced area to prevent damage to the landscaping.

67 Avenue and west of 112 Avenue

The connection to the existing deep storm line on 67 Avenue has been completed. ATCO lowered the required section of its gas line and the alley was permanently restored in mid-August 2021.
