​Overview

After assessing our long term plans for the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2019, we're now planning to expand the existing Centre of Excellence building with a second floor to accommodate the additional space required by our operations staff for hygiene facilities. This project will also include renovations in the basement of the Centre of Excellence and modifications to the current control room. As shown in the rendering below, the conceptual design of the addition has been engineered to align with the aesthetic of the Centre of Excellence and other buildings on site. Although the design may change throughout detailed engineering, we'll continue to provide updates to the Community and ensure the visual aesthetics align with existing architecture on site.

In 2018 and 2019 we engaged with the Community regarding a proposed Operations Centre and Parking Facility. After listening to the feedback provided by the Community, we made a commitment that these facilities would be accommodated within our existing fenceline at the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Centre of Excellence building addition project helps us to achieve the operational needs at the site while integrating community feedback. We'll continue to provide updates to the Community as we make progress on the project.

Project details

  • Location: The location and details associated with the expansion can be seen on the image above. 
  • Height of the expansion: The height of the addition will vary but won't exceed the height of existing permanent infrastructure on site. Height will vary between 3.5 – 9.5 metres (m) above ground.
  • Schedule: We plan to start construction in summer 2021.   
  • Hours of construction: We anticipate the hours of work to be Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • What you may see during construction: Company vehicles, crews, equipment, a tandem truck, hydrovac trucks, excavators, flatbed trucks, a crane, picker trucks and an articulated trench roller will be used during construction. Once these vehicles arrive on site, they will be operating within the existing fenceline. We don't anticipate any long-term traffic impacts to the roads located near the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Trail closures: No trail closures will be required.
  • Road closures: No road closures are anticipated as a result of this work. All traffic and equipment will access the site through the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant, no impacts to the surrounding park are anticipated. There may be slight increases in traffic for the delivery of equipment and materials.
  • Noise: This work will create typical noise associated with construction. We will comply with the City of Edmonton's Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control.
  • Workspace: We'll be locating laydown areas within the existing fenceline of the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. All construction activities will be in accordance with City of Edmonton's bylaws, occupational health and safety requirements, as well as EPCOR's health, safety and environment procedures and guidelines. No impacts to park users are anticipated.
  • Reclamation: Once construction is complete, excavations will be backfilled.
  • Permits: All required approvals, including a Development Permit, will be obtained from the City of Edmonton prior to construction.
  • Environmental considerations: We don't anticipate that tree removal will be required for this project.
