Overview

As part of our commitment to safety, we're planning improvements to pedestrian accessibility and safety at the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. We collect safety observations from employees on a daily basis and our data shows that we should be making some improvements for pedestrians on our site. This project will increase the safety of staff, contractors and community partners walking within the fenceline of the facility.

Our records indicate that over the past couple of years we had the following number of visitors coming to site for tours of the facility:

2018 – 35 tours (643 people) and 4342 students through RiverWatch Alberta.
2019 – 43 tours (702 people) and 4040 students through RiverWatch Alberta.

The East Gate Pedestrian Access and Walkway project includes the modification of the east gate to improve pedestrian access entering and leaving the site. We're also making improvements to an existing walking path on the south side of the facility connected to the City's shared use path to improve the safety of employees and community members and organizations walking across the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. The images below show the specific locations of these planned improvements.

This project will result in a net increase in vegetation on site, in accordance with our Vegetation Plan.

Project details

Schedule: We started modifications this fall inside the fenceline and we'll begin work outside the existing fenceline in 2021. The work required outside of our existing fenceline is minor in nature and will coincide with trail rehabilitation being completed by the City of Edmonton.
Hours of construction: Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
What you may see during construction: Company vehicles, crews, equipment and flatbed trucks.
Trail closures: The work required on the East end of the site outside of our existing fenceline will coincide with the City of Edmonton's trail rehabilitation program.
Road closures: No road closures are required as a result of this work. All traffic and equipment will access the site through the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant, no impacts to the surrounding park are anticipated.
Noise: This work will create typical noise associated with construction. We are complying with the City of Edmonton's Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control.
Workspace: We've located laydown areas within the existing fenceline of the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. All construction activities are in accordance with City of Edmonton's bylaws, occupational health and safety requirements, as well as EPCOR's health, safety and environment procedures and guidelines. No impacts to park users are anticipated.
Permits: All required approvals have been obtained from the City of Edmonton prior to construction.
Environmental considerations: We need to remove a row of lilac shrubs within our fenceline at the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant to accommodate the project. At this time, we don't anticipate that trees located along the perimeter of the fenceline or outside of the fenceline will be impacted. The amount of vegetation removal required for the project has been reduced as much as possible. The project will not impact any watercourses, wetlands or other waterbodies. The shrubs removed will be replaced on site in alignment with our Vegetation Plan. There will be a net gain of shrubs and visual improvements / additional screening in the area once the project is complete in 2021.
