We built a new standalone facility in the southeast corner of the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 10977 50 Street NW. The new facility accepts and treats sanitary grit residual material collected from sewer sand traps and sanitary lift stations. The Gold Bar Grit facility was built within the plant's existing fenced boundary and won the Environmental - Award of Excellence and Sustainable Design - Award of Merit at the Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Showcase Gala.   

Why the facility is required

The City required an alternate disposal method for the residual material we collect from sanitary lift stations and combined sewer sand traps. This new facility at the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant allows us to screen, wash and separate the grit material, and then to safely treat the wastewater through our existing wastewater treatment process.

The facility requires a high volume of water (142m3/hour), so instead of potable water, treated effluent from Gold Bar is used to wash the sanitary grit material, and then it re-enters Gold Bar's treatment process. 

The fine grit material that is washed and dewatered only contains three per cent organics and can be reused for other purposes, such as road construction and trench backfill. This reuse keeps this material out of the landfill.  


Appearance and building specifications

​Built from metal siding in a colour similar to other buildings on site, the building is about 23.5 metres (m) wide by 20.5 m deep. The roof is about 9.4 m high on the truck bay side and 6.3 m tall on the east side of the building.

Project timeline

An open house for this project was held in November 2015 at the Capilano Community Hall. In March 2016, we submitted our Environmental Impact Assessment and Site Location Study to Edmonton City Council for review. We received approval to proceed with the project on March 1, 2016. Construction began in the spring of 2016 and was completed in Spring, 2018.
