We're proposing to replace two transformers at the Strathcona Substation because the existing units are nearing the end of their useful lives. Replacing these transformers will help us continue to deliver reliable electricity to Edmontonians in this area.

Project overview

If the project is approved, we'll:

  • Replace two transformers that are nearing the end of their useful lives with similar-capacity units
  • Remove 11 external voltage regulators from service, as their function is now included in the new transformers

We'll be submitting the required application for this project to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in late January 2020.

If approved, the tentative schedule of work would be as follows:

Transformer #3

  • April 2020: We'll begin replacing the transformer and expect that it will take about three months to complete.
  • December 2020: Once the new transformer is in service, we'll remove 6 external voltage regulators from service. We expect this to be completed by the end of December 2020.

Transformer #2

  • April 2021: We'll begin replacing this transformer and expect that it will take about three months to complete
  • December 2021: Once the new transformer is in service, we'll remove 5 external voltage regulators from service. The entire project should be completed by the end of December 2021.

Please note: These timelines are estimates and may change based on weather, procurement of materials, and construction conditions.
