One of the transformers at our Namao Substation is nearing the end of its useful life. We are proposing to replace the transformer so we can continue to deliver reliable electricity to Edmontonians in this area.

Project overview

If the project is approved, we'll:

  • Replace one transformer that is nearing the end of its useful life with a similar-capacity unit
  • Remove two external voltage regulators; one that is currently in-service and one that was previously decommissioned. The function of the in-service regulator will be included in the new transformer.
  • Install a transformer oil containment enclosure
Schedule

We intend to submit the required application for this project to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in late January 2020.

If approved, the tentative schedule of work would be as follows:

  • May 2020: We'll begin replacement of the transformer. We expect it will take about three months to complete.
  • Once the transformer is in service:
    • We'll begin the removal of the two external voltage regulators
    • We'll begin installing the transformer oil containment enclosure
  • December 2020: The entire project is expected to be completed, with the exception of the installation of the oil containment enclosure, which may extend into 2021.

Please note: These timelines are estimates and may change based on weather, procurement of materials, and construction conditions.
